Carolina Velásquez

Carolina S. Velásquez-Calderón is an Assistant Professor at Florida State University in the Department of Geography and the African American Studies Program within the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy. She holds a Ph.D. in Disaster Science and Management from the University of Delaware and a master’s degree in Caribbean Studies from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Caribbean Campus. With extensive experience in environmental and disaster risk management, Dr. Velásquez-Calderón’s research focuses on water crises, risk perception, social vulnerability to disasters, climate change adaptation, and nature-based solutions, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean. Her recent publications include the book Climate Change and Adaptation in the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve: From Local Thinking to Local Actions (2025) and the article “Desalted Waters: Unveiling and Tackling Injustice in San Andrés Island Water Crises” (Disaster Prevention & Management, 2025). She is a member of the Latin American and Caribbean Women’s Network for Disaster Risk Reduction (RedLAC) and part of the Global Roster of Experts of the International Science Council, where she contributes to advancing research and policy on disaster risk, resilience, and societal responses to hazards.
